The story so far

August 2020 - April 2021

Premise

More than twenty years have passed since the fall of the Dark Lord, and life has moved on. The wizarding world continues turning in the same manner it always has, but in the shadows of forgotten corners, dissent has begun to arise. Strange activity from out of the East stirs the fires of change as conflict in Bulgaria attracts Ministry forces and repels magical creatures. Upheaval and revolution buckle the foundations of the status quo. Unresolved issues, glossed over in favor of the luxury of peace, refuse to be ignored any longer. What is truth, what is justice, what sort of world would you create if you were given the power to reshape it?

Here at HFTA, the story is ever changing. Our community focuses on Hogwarts, as well as the Ministry of Magic and the Wizarding World at large. Opportunities to participate in site plot are ever growing, and above all, personal plots are encouraged.

August 2020

Wizarding World

The story begins in Diagon Alley. During the First Annual Summer Festival is brought to a close by a breach in Gringotts security. Meanwhile, magical creatures in Eastern Europe capture the attention of magizooligists as herds begin to abandon their native stomping grounds, migrating across country for reasons unknown.

September 2020

Wizarding World

Magical creatures leave Eastern Europe en masse to take up residence throughout the UK, disturbing local herds and overcrowding protected habitats. While the cause of these migrations is yet unknown, strange rumors have begun, whispers that missing persons in Bulgaria have resulted in a call for British aid. Auror forces amass in in the region with suspected relationship to Nurmergard prison.

Hogwarts

The school year begins complete with an eerie warning from the Sorting Hat, and Headmaster Greavish meets with members of staff to prepare for the coming semester.

October 2020

Wizarding World

British forces come under fire from unknown aggressors in Bulgaria, destroying a Muggle community in the process. In an unprecedented display of secrecy, Minister for Magic Shacklebolt refuses to disclose word of the situation, instituting a "Nox Policy" and detaining Ministry employees until a broadcast of causalities can be released. Among the injured: Harry Potter; among the missing Ron Weasley. Backlash from this decision to withhold information results in the resignation of Minister Shacklebolt, and Ministry reigns are handed over to Wizengamot Deputy Melloc Crowther. News trickles out slowly, rumors circulating of a strange, unknown necrotic affliction plaguing survivors of the fight in Bulgaria, but at last, the opportunity for answers is presented in the form of an interview with survivor Harry Potter. Though his disclosure remains limited, the suggestion of an approaching war is on his lips.

Hogwarts

Volkov's Traveling Circus arrives in the UK, setting up in Hogsmeade for several weeks of entertainment for the students of Hogwarts. Strange events ensue. Inside Hogwarts' very walls, two students are attacked by an unknown circus worker who appears to be friendly with Headmaster Greavish. The man, revealed to be an old acquaintance of Greavish's, is discovered to be under the Imperius curse. Looking to the Divination professor for guidance regarding the attack and its possible relationship to the Sorting Hat's prophecy at the beginning of the year, a strange comment leads him to believe an artefact in his possession might be the key to approaching conflict: The Dragon's Eye. The next weekend, down at the fairgrounds, a student is placed under the Imperius curse by an unknown entity and forced to fire on her fellow students. Meanwhile, a group of boys discover a strange woman in the midst of a transformation in a changing tent. This woman makes a reappearance at the fair's third weekend, manning a fortune telling booth during a special Halloween event. The fairgrounds are packed with students attending a special masquerade beneath the full moon, but a group heading back to the school falls victim to attack by a group of werewolves. Though injuries are incurred, the night produces no casualties. Consequences, however, are far more lasting.

November 2020

Wizarding World

Weeks after his disappearance, Ron Weasley is found alive but in severe condition in the ruins of Bulgaria and is subsequently hospitalized. In international news, Minister Crowther attends a summit addressing the standing of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, voicing his support for the measure.

Hogwarts

Following the attack on Halloween, Headmaster Greavish is arrested and brought into the Ministry for questioning with regard to his relationship with Volkov--who disappeared following the events of Halloween night, along with the rest of the circus--and any knowledge of transpired events. In his absence, Hogwarts falls under the leadership of Helena Helstrom, in partnership with Ministry representative Martin Burridge. The school is placed on lockdown with a heavy Auror presence, and Hogsmeade weekends are cancelled while Aurors search for the assailants still at large.

December 2020

Wizarding World

An explosion in the Rue d'Étoile in Paris, France places wizarding secrecy at risk. Though the event is largely concealed, threats throughout Europe place leadership on high alert, and an attitude of disapproval regarding secrecy measures is brought to light by certain members of the populace. In Diagon Alley, a group of fanatics known as "The Prophets" appear, voicing their controversial opinions on the Statute of Secrecy and Muggle relations, and handing out fliers to passers-by.

Ministry

A group of individuals break into the Department of Mysteries, sent by the same strange witch seen at the traveling circus in Hogsmeade. The pale witch's name is revealed to be Morrigan, and though her ultimate goals remain a mystery, it is clear she is searching for one of the Dragon's Eye talismans. Her retrieval team proves unsuccessful in procuring one of the artefacts from the depths of the Ministry, their attempts met with retaliation from Auror forces. In the chaos, the Head of the Department of Mysteries is felled.

Hogwarts

Following a controversial trial, Bulgraham Greavish is released from Ministry custody, though his title of Headmaster is officially revoked. Helstrom is officially granted the title of Headmistress by the Hogwarts board of governors, and with the beginning of Christmas break, lock-down protocols are slowly phased out with the total cessation of Ministry presence at Hogwarts by the start of the new year.

January 2021

Ministry

On January 3rd, the body of Ron Weasley is discovered by Auror forces inside Nurmengard prison. Aurors return to Britain to apprehend the impostor presumed to be Weasley, who had been recovering in a hospital bed since his discovery in November, bringing him into the Ministry for questioning. Before the fake Weasley can be properly detained, however, his body explodes in the Ministry atrium, releasing a cloud of necrotic spores. Many are killed or injured in the blast, and the Ministry is effectively shut down for several days as teams attempt to nullify the biological toxins within. Death and injury abound, and though the situation is resolved, the Ministry remains on high alert. At an Interdepartmental Meeting of the Ministry regarding addressing disruptions to Ministry security at the end of the month, Minister Crowther is assassinated by a man trumpeting Grindelwald's notorious slogan, "For the greater good."

Hogwarts

Meanwhile, January 3rd sees the Hogwarts express return students to school for another semester. A strange radio broadcast, airing just before the train is due to arrive at Hogsmeade station, draws Aurors to the village. Followers of Morrigan are discovered outside WWN headquarters, and a short chase results in a duel on the tracks. The rails are ruined, the approaching Express train crashes, and chaos breaks out throughout the town. Students are herded back to the castle as quickly as possible while Hogwarts staff await the arrival of reinforcements from the Ministry and St. Mungo's, but none arrive. Those Aurors on the scene depart in search of aid, but none return. The next morning, Morrigan breaks her way into Hogwarts, offering herself up like a savior and revealing that a magic barrier has been erected around the Hogwarts and Hogsmeade area. The barrier, she claims, is in place to keep students safe from the likes of Gellert Grindelwald, who made a spectral reappearance outside of Hogsmeade (as captured on film by a local photographer), and who she claims is responsible for the train crash. With the help of a bit of Legilimency, Morrigan convinces Hogwarts leadership to allow her to remain and "guard the school." Under Morrigan's reign, classes and rules become entirely optional, and students are granted ultimate freedom in an attempt to win them over to her cause. Though post through the barrier, including news, is able to continue as normal, letters are tampered with to keep anyone from seeing the complete picture.

February 2021

Wizarding World

Rumors of Grindelwald sightings begin to surface, trickling down from Scotland. Across Britain, threats to Secrecy crop up in the form of breaches to the security of wizarding sectors and the creation of a community known as "Yatton," which seeks to integrate Muggle parents of wizarding children more completely into the wizarding world.

Ministry

Following the Minster's assassination, the Wizengamot declare a State of Emergency, enforcing council rule until such time as the state of affairs in the UK have calmed enough to hold an election for Minister. In the Auror office, a communicator found on the corpse of the Minster's assassin transmits a message for those in the vicinity to hear, revealing Morrigan's plans to leave behind the barrier surrounding Hogwarts and allow the situation within to escalate. In an attempt to navigate the barrier situation, the DMLE launches the creation of a task force across departments, dedicated to working toward dismantling it.

Hogwarts

True to her word, Morrigan departs, leaving Hogwarts in confusion as to her plans and their options. Behind the scenes, Morrigan has taken the Dragon's Eye talisman, formerly in Greavish's possession, for purposes unknown, and has left word for her followers to maintain the situation inside the barrier. In the vacuum left by Morrigan's presence, the school's House Elves begin behaving strangely, leading to complications with food service delivery, and out on the grounds, a group of centaurs, claiming to be in league with Morrigan's plans, make known their intention to reclaim Hogwarts' land for themselves.

March 2021

Wizarding World

Grindelwald continues to advance south, visiting Muggle and Wizarding communities alike and testing the limit of secrecy. The Prophets establish a presence for themselves in the Quibbler and hold meetings to gather followers to their cause. Meanwhile, a cease and desist order is issued to residents of the experimental community known as Yatton, resulting in a raid of the town at the end of the month.

Ministry

The Ministry institutes a new set of protocols, effectively shutting down magical and Muggle relationships in a decree not dissimilar to Rappaport's Law. This breakdown in communication leads to outrage from the Muggle Prime Minister, who has been left in the dark since the takeover of the Wizengamot. In an attempt to edify Ministry employees, the Wizengamot hold a series of meetings to discuss instituted changes, and meet backlash from those assembled. On Level Two, the Ministry's task force intercepts another message from Morrigan, indicating further escalation of the situation inside the barrier into all-out mayhem, and plans are made to advance their timeline for mapping the barrier's edge as quickly as possible. An unexpected visit from a Hogwarts professor, enabled to escape through the barrier with the aid of his son on the other side, supplies the task force with the final clue they need to organize.

Hogwarts

The situation inside the barrier continues to devolve, resulting in the shutdown of all post through the barrier, completely isolating those within from the outside world. In an attempt to restore order, Nicolette Babineaux is elected to take over as headmistress and fill the void left by Helstrom (who was rendered largely disoriented by Morrigan's Legilimency prior to the pale witch's departure). Staff members, in collaboration with students, begin organizing to defend the school, and down in the village, Hogsmeadeans are engaged in similar action, determined to keep their town safe. Hogwarts House Elves continue to behave strangely, and Hogsmeade is overrun by a strange stampede of acromantulas.

In a massive event, the Ministry penetrates the barrier at last. One team branches off to liaise with Hogwarts staff, journeying into the Dark Forest in pursuit of the artefact believed responsible for generating the barrier. Simultaneously, another team of task force members attempt to reach out to Hogsmeadeans and prepare the town for a possible escalation in events. The village breaks out into a firefight as followers of Morrigan generate chaos, and inside the walls of Hogwarts, the school initiates a lock-down. Within the Dark Forest, the barrier artefact is discovered to be under the guard of the forest's centaurs, and while Hogwarts leadership attempt to negotiate with the aggressive herd, it is at last broken, felling the barrier once and for all.

Plot FAQ

What sort of plot does HFTA employ? Why?

HFTA utilizes several different plotting formats that have experienced a great deal of change since the site's inception in June 2016. The site was originally created with a rigid plot structure designed to heavily guide characters within the world. While we still employ an overarching plot, it is now far more loose and relaxed, and allows players the chance to influence the overall direction of the site. We also love and are highly supportive of individual character plotlines. When every character contributes to the board in their own way, it makes the site more interesting for everyone!

Why has plot changed?

The site was originally founded by Mica, who created the board and original plot storyline. Around in-character January, that plotline reached a branching-off point. Mica made the decision to open up plot to members at large, giving them the opportunity to influence the direction of the board and allowing her to take a step back from large-scale plotting. Shortly after, prior to the beginning of in-character February, Mica made the decision to step down as Admin and turned over board-operation responsibilities to the remaining members of our team. Since then, we've been experimenting with new styles of plot distribution and have adjusted the scope of our overarching plot to see what suits everyone the best! We realize that our members enjoy different aspects of both a highly-structured plot and a completely-open plot, and we're doing our best to strike a happy balance between these methods.

What is considered site plot and what isn't?

There are different sorts of plot on HFTA, but "site plot" involves the board at large. Site plot events are organized by the admin team, either publicly or behind the scenes, and will normally affect a wide pool of characters ranging from an entire usergroup to the entire board. Site plot will always be marked with a post icon, either "Plot" or "Clue" as the thread necessitates (threads marked "Clue" may contain some relevant information, but ultimately are not as impactful as those marked "Plot"). With the exception of News, threads that are not marked "Plot" are not considered site plot. While not every single News resource will contain plot-relevant information (looking at you, Quibbler), the VAST majority of them do. Even those articles that are only there for fun provide opportunities for your characters to react with and engage in the wizarding world and aim to establish a greater context for the world in which we play. A list of plot-relevant threads and News articles can be found via the navigation bar at the top of our site.

How can I get my characters more involved in site plot?

It is certainly not mandatory to get involved in site plot, but if you would like your characters to be involved or you simply feel a little more on the outside than you'd like, here's a list of things to do first:
  1. Check your activity. Organizing plot is a lot of work and affects the site as a whole. Participating in site plot is a commitment to both the plot thread and the entire board at large. Before signing up for a plot event, please take a moment to consider the commitment you're undertaking. We understand that life can get in the way, and we aim to be accommodating when these situations arise. As a rule of thumb, we like to see members consistently active before asking them to take on more responsibility. You can check your own activity by using our site's search engine to look up your characters' most recent posts. The search engine can be found HERE! (To refresh, our activity requirements state that a member must consistently post at least once every two weeks to avoid losing their claims).
  2. Read the news. News often contains important information about what is happening in the world, and this context provides insight as to the direction of site plot. Getting your character up-to-date with what's going on around them may leave you feeling more prepared to craft plots of your own and jump in where you see an opportunity.
  3. Check for open threads. We do our best every month to make sure there are open or wide-reaching threads on the board for your participation. Being an active participant in these threads is a great way to help everyone out and puts you in a position to seek out more plot interaction. Characters who give themselves a reason to be involved and go searching for opportunities themselves are more likely to be involved.
  4. Craft personal plots. This may seem like it has nothing to do with site plot, but it very much does. Characters who are engaging with the world and characters around them have more potential to influence the direction the board takes. It's the same in real life: the more connections you have, the more influence you possess. Who knows––you may find that your own plans have the potential to overlap with site plot all on their own, or even alter the course of a major event!
  5. PM an Admin. If you've gotten this far and still feel like you'd like more to do, please do not hesitate to PM an Admin with your thoughts. We'd love to help you out. We have a lot of moving pieces to position, and quite a few members to consider, so it's very difficult for us to check in on everyone individually. We also recognize that there are some members who don't wish to engage with site plot at all, and we want to respect that desire as well. Let us know if anything grabs your attention, if your character has any special skills that you would like to see utilized, or reach out with ideas that pop into your head! We're happy to field questions, and we can work together to ensure you and your characters are fulfilled.

I have an idea, but I'm worried it will conflict with the direction of the main plot or that it won't be otherwise approved. What should I do?

Ask! We love hearing your ideas, and the last thing we ever want to do is simply shoot you down. Sometimes, an idea might not work out exactly as you conceived it for a number of reasons, be it the direction of the site plot or interference with another character's personal plot. This does not mean, however, the idea has to be thrown out. Sometimes a resolution is as simple as tweaking a date!

Where can I ask questions?

You are always welcome to use Personal Messenger, but some members prefer off-site methods of communication. All members of the Admin team are available off-site on different platforms. We're more than happy to share our handles with you for your preferred method! Don't hesitate to ask. For more sensitive questions that you might prefer to ask anonymously, you can use our form HERE.
