SUMMER 2021

It's time for a little rest and recuperation. After a tumultuous schoolyear culminating in coordinated attacks upon both Hogwarts and London, magical citizens could certainly use a break. Summer is upon us, and while the immediate danger has passed, not every creature is taking the summer off.

Teddy had no way of telling if what she'd experienced with the Potters was what it was supposed to be like to have siblings, but it was the closest she was going to get. It was therefore her most solemn duty to embarrass her godfather's children, these almost-siblings, at every life event possible. Albus would forgive her. Probably.

She had set up a room in the Three Broomsticks for Albus' birthday party, and while she knew it was a day that the boy would not have minded if it had passed quietly, that was simply not an option with the Potters or Weasleys. The stray Lupin had her mother's desire to make things noisy and colorful as well. The room was decorated accordingly, like Teddy had tripped through a bucket full of rainbow confetti, and hit every wall on the way out. A large cake with fifteen thin layers was set precariously on a center table, held together by magic and a lot of prayer. A couple of smaller tables were set around the room with bottles of butterbeer on top, charmed to turn the taster's tongue some ridiculous color upon ingestion. The firewhiskey was invited too, but it remained on the taller-than-Albus shelf. Some of the family was over seventeen, and some were close enough.

With a careful twirl of her wand, she obscured the edible cake with a charm, and set out a smaller cake on the front of the table. The moderately sized rectangular 'cake' was actually balloons packed with glittery confetti, covered in icing--it was meant to explode when Albus cut into it, because she would be ashamed of herself if she didn't honor the Marauders at a Potter birthday party. The fact that she enjoyed mostly-harmless pranks was beside the point.

Now all she had to do was wait for her family, and waiting gave her time to be nervous about how she presented to them. The majority of the family likely had some suspicion about her genders, but she'd never attended a family event as a woman before. There would be no discussion, simply a presentation of the way she was; it wouldn't do to take the embarrassing attention off the birthday boy. In a way, this was just a test run for future Christmases and birthdays and Merlin forbid the eventual weddings that would all follow a lifetime of attachment to this enormous, wonderful family. She chewed her lip and toyed with the end of her long aqua ponytail, tapping her feet on the floor to see who she could expect first...but didn't forget the bright smile on her face when the door first opened.

James was convinced that Albus did his best to be horrendously inconvenient at all times. Why else would he have insisted on popping into existence right in the middle of exam season? Defense was over and done with, at least, but that was most certainly not the end of James’ tribulations - he had to do well in Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology, and Delaney always managed to pull something nastily unexpected out of his cauldron for their Potions exams. All things considered, he most certainly did not have time for a birthday celebration and rather thought the entire thing might have waited at least until exam week was over, but complaining would make him look like a bad brother or something so he kept quiet and resigned himself to a couple of days scratched off his schedule. After all, Teddy had promised Firewhiskey and James fully intended to take him up on the offer.

He’d picked up Louis at around eleven, because it was a bit of a walk down to Hogsmeade and it wouldn’t do to have Albus meet them on the way or get there before them. Of all his cousins, James found Louis to be easily the most personable; he was calm as a summer sky and had this air of understated intelligence about him that just made you feel like you had to trust him. Being smarter than James wasn’t that much of an ask, to be honest, but there was Dominique smart and there was Louis smart; there was smart that made you feel stupid and smart that made you feel safe. He supposed it had something to do with that Slytherin ambition as opposed to that Ravenclaw love of knowledge. Not that he begrudged Dominique her ambition, of course; if someone had to be in charge he’d rather it be her, because she definitely knew what she was doing.

The walk was pleasant enough, if still a little chilly for James’ tastes - but then, his body had never quite mastered homeostasis, it seemed, because he was always either hot or cold and nowhere in between. It was nothing that a scarf and a beanie wouldn’t fix, at any rate, and the sooner he was in the warmth of the Three Broomsticks the better. He was already a bit more excited about the entire day; perhaps a bit of a break was just what he needed after DADA, to give his brain a bit of a reset and get him back on track for all the others. Besides, he hadn’t seen Teddy in so long - it was ridiculous, really, given that they worked so close by, but it was hard to find time for visits when one was busy trying not to be the family disappointment.

It had been hard to find time to think about a present for Albus, too, especially at such short notice - he’d hoped maybe that they might do something after exams were over, so he could get those out of the way before dealing with it, but clearly the universe had other plans. Showing up with nothing was out of the question, of course, and while usually he’d have picked up a few sweets from Honeydukes, that seemed a little in bad taste these days. Obviously this was a whole issue, because Albus was weirdly private for a boy of fourteen (fifteen?) and James wasn’t entirely sure he knew what he’d actually like. In the end, he’d settled on a seemingly plain leather wristband that changed colour according to the wearer’s mood - this way, he might get some warning of an imminent Albus-plosion before it was too late to retreat.

Alright, I’m here, where’s the Firewhiskey? Oh and I brought this guy, I dunno who he is, just found him wandering by the Lake really.” James burst into the Broomsticks, dragging Louis behind him by the arm. “Looked like he could use a drink. Are you seventeen? You aren’t, no, I know that. Butterbeer! How’re you doing, Teddy?” He paused just to take a breath and absorb the environment, noting with distinct elation how very bright everything was. Colours could make even the worst day seem a little better, which was why James enjoyed Teddy’s company so very much. “Merlin, looks like the aftermath of a Fwooper massacre in here. I love it.

The exams seemed to be determined to wring Louis' head like a sponge. He knew he was smart, he knew his predicted grades were incredibly high, but sometimes all that left him with was the knowledge of just how much the professors expected of him. He didn't want to let them down, and he didn't want to let himself down, either. He knew he could easily achieve his predicted grades, a smattering of Os an Es across the board, but he knew he'd feel like a failure at the sight of any As on his grade chart at the end of the school year. Of course, the exams themselves weren't exactly a walk in the park; the professors were hardly going to take it easy on them at any given point, let alone their OWL exams.

As such, when he'd received word of a small party going on for Albus' birthday, he hadn't hesitated too long before agreeing to come along. He was acutely aware that studying was important, but he also didn't want to risk cramming too much and burning himself out. Breaks and enjoyment were important, otherwise, he'd just be stressed all the time and that wasn't conducive to focusing during the actual exams. It'd also given him the excuse to tinker some more, which he'd let slip to the back seat a little to make way for studying, but he hoped Albus would still enjoy the simple, brushed gold coloured quill holder he'd created for him. One day, when he was clear from school, he'd work on enchanting items. He had no doubt that it would take a level of study that he couldn't achieve while also getting good grades.

James had collected him early which was fine by him; while he and James seemed to be rather polar opposites as cousins, they got along well with each other. James was easy to talk to, often a particularly friendly face, and Louis knew he wasn't the type of people to measure him against the successes of his sisters, despite being in the family. He supposed that came from having the famous father like James did; Louis was fairly sure he'd gotten away lightly with that one. Not too many people knew or cared about Ron Weasley's eldest brother and his French wife.

He couldn't help but laugh as James dragged him into the room in the Broomsticks; he had no chance of resisting the older boy's grasp - quidditch player versus bookworm did not favour the latter - but didn't particularly want to anyway, happy to go along with the jokes James was setting up. "How can you know how old I am if you just met me? Maybe I'm old enough for firewhiskey; you don't know." Of course he wasn't, and he had no inclination to try right then, either. Butterbeer would do fine for him. He took a moment to observe the room as well, grinning at the colourful nature of it all. It was definitely refreshing to see something so cheerful, considering how things had been recently. "Pretty sure James means that as a good thing. It looks great, Teddy."

He turned to the other figure in the room as he spoke, and faltered just a little. The person was unmistakably Teddy; they had bright hair and this was definitely the right room at the right time. But the person was also unmistakably a girl, something Teddy was not, last time Louis had checked. Louis was on good terms with Teddy; he knew the break up with Victoire had been rough going, and he'd pretty much stayed clear of the whole thing given it wasn't really any of his business. Regardless, it seemed that it wasn't Teddy's fault, so he didn't have to hold a grudge like he did with a certain Hawthorne. None of that, however, explained Teddy's new appearance. Was this a metamorphmagus thing he'd never really noticed? Or something else? He wasn't going to just draw attention to it though, so he put on his best smile to hide his faltering. "Rosmerta didn't mind you borrowing the room, then?"

It wasn't every day that he got to spend time with his family members, especially since they were all scattered across different houses. His cousin Dominique had sought him out and offered to spend time together with him. Although he had to admit that it was a little strange, she was still family at the end of the day and who was he to deny both of them that opportunity? He considered the fact that Dominique was graduating this year and it wouldn't be long until she became a working adult, that she would no longer have time to be around her younger cousins as much as she used to.

After all, she knew he had a sweet tooth and when she proposed on taking him out to Butterbeer, he immediately had said with a vigorous nod. A fresh set of quills sounded really good too, considering that he was the sort who preferred to write his own notes and spent a lot of time writing down personal things in his journal as well.

He quickly made himself comfortable, pulling on a fresh pair of jeans and a t-shirt and made sure he applied deodorant to himself – he didn't wanna smell bad – before pulling on his sneakers and making his way to their agreed meeting point: the courtyard.

Now when he thought about it, when was the last time he had spent time with the French side of his family? Most of his memories consist of him playing with Louis since they were the youngest sons of their respective families. The salty air was something that had gotten ingrained into his memory and at that moment, he knew that he liked the smell of the ocean.

When a familiar head of blonde hair came into view, he quickened his steps, making sure to greet her. "Hi Dominique," he said, flushing just a little. "Apologies for being late."

Thus, they began their trek towards Hogsmeade. It wasn't very far from where they were but Albus knew that if one travelled alone, it would feel like a very long walk.

Roxanne was convinced she was going to be late to the party. She'd been studying far too hard for far too long, again, and had completely lost track of the time, but it was the middle of the exam season for merlin's sake! Six NEWTs was a frankly ridiculous workload, even she'd admit it, but there was nothing she'd even consider dropping. This party was a distraction from her work, but it was one she sorely needed before she lost her mind entirely just from the stress of it all.

She hurried from the castle with Albus' present, a small wooden box engraved with the Gryffindor lion, with it's insides magically enlarged and entirely packed with muggle sweets and hoped she wasn't going to be turning up after the birthday boy. That'd just be embarrassing, and she really wanted to see the look on his face at finding an unexpected family gathering in the village. They didn't do enough of these, she couldn't even remember the last time she'd seen Teddy, and she couldn't blame the exams for everything.

Mercifully, when she got to the pub she was only slightly out of breath, and it appeared she'd made it in before Albus. With a bright smile she looked around at the decorations, the explosion in a glitter factory aesthetic being one she definitely appreciated. Her smile grew at sight of her cousins, honorary or otherwise, and she offered them a wave as she approached.

"Sorry I'm late, got caught up in studying again." she explained, with an apologetic shrug, though her smile didn't go anywhere. "I love what you've done with the place, but please tell me you didn't use any of my dad's stuff to do it." she joked to Teddy, a twinkle in her eye. The kind of things the jokeshop carried were not her idea of funny, but she was at least reasonably certain teddy had more sense than her part of the (admittedly rather large) family. "I love your hair too, it's almost as amazing as mine." she added, grinning once again. She certainly wasn't going to make any more of a thing than that about how teddy was presenting herself, today or any other.

As much as Hugo had been looking forward to this nice little study break since Teddy had sent the message, he couldn't deny that he'd like it loads better when he didn't need a babysitter to make it down to Hogwarts. He had been forced to lurk awkwardly in the entrance hall while waiting for someone who was heading in his direction as he forgot to ask his cousins about it beforehand. He'd made it, though, even if he was pretty sure he was running a bit late. Which really shouldn't be a surprise. Hugo and timeliness didn't really get along all that well, but it usually worked out alright.

As he walked into the pub and noticed that the birthday boy was still missing, he couldn't help but be glad that he'd made it on time. See? It always worked out for him. Dark blue eyes flickered around to take note of each of the cousins present, and it looked like all but one of them were currently residing at Hogwarts where he could pester them (with love) whenever he so chose.

However, it was the non-Hogwarts cousin (and Teddy was his cousin, no matter that they weren't technically related by blood) that caught his attention. He loved all of his cousins, but there had always been something special about Teddy, possibly the fact that she always looked different. Even growing up in a magical household, it was always amazing to see his cousin's features change at will. Plus, maybe it was the fact that Teddy was the oldest, but she was just awesome. It was just as simple as that.

So, maybe it was a surprise that Teddy's appearance was more feminine than normal, but that didn't dissuade the youngest of the clan as he made a beeline toward her, setting his present down on a random flat surface along the way. He barely noticed all of the decorations (though those would certainly get his attention soon) as he moved into great his cousin. "TEDDY! It's been so long!" he shouted as he moved in for the closest thing to a tackle hug he could manage without sending them both flying to their bums.

He caught the tail-end of Roxy's comments, and he scrunched up his face a little. He did like the color, but... "Red would would have been better. Not Weasley red, though. Gryffindor red. Maybe with some gold streaks" Not that he was plying for his favorite party trick or anything; he just sincerely thought Gryffindor colors would look great for hair. Weaslely red not so much, and he was forever thankful that his Mum's brown had been more dominant than the Weasley red.

Albus’ birthday had come at a time that was equal parts convenient and inconvenient. Convenient, because with exams under way, it was easy enough to plan a surprise party (though she hadn’t really had any hand in it other than offering her services to escort her younger cousin to Hogsmeade) that might actually manage to come off as a surprise. Inconvenient, because it meant she wasn’t able to spend the afternoon studying for her Charms exam. Still, this was Albus’ day (or, well, not quite the day, but as close as they could manage, trying to wrangle such a large family into one place at relatively the same time). It was important, and she could put aside some study time to ensure he made it to his birthday celebrations on time. She arranged to meet him in the courtyard, tempting him with the promise of Butterbeer and the ever-practical suggestion they pick up some fresh quills to bring them through the remainder of exam season in one piece.

Albus really was growing up. So focused on her own growth and goals, it was easy to miss the progress her cousins were making in their own lives. It felt like one moment, they were a full head shorter than her, running about underfoot or playing in the garden at the Burrow and then in the blink of an eye, they’d outgrown her, maturing quicker than she’d thought possible. She couldn’t help it; when she thought of Albus, she still thought of the young boy who’d visited her home during summer holidays before he’d started school and who’d tagged along after Louis. She’d certainly thought herself much more mature and worldly than her younger brother and little cousin. When she was younger, she hadn’t wanted very much to do with either of them. She had always wanted to be older, to prove herself. She supposed she’d done that. Watching Albus cross the courtyard to meet her, she experienced a rare pang of regret that she hadn’t made more use of the time they’d had in school together. He was becoming his own person, someone worth knowing.

“You weren’t very late,” she responded to his apology with playful chiding. “I don’t imagine the pub will run out of Butterbeer before we arrive. That would be a real tragedy.”

They arrived at the Three Broomsticks a bit later than she’d anticipated, since Albus had been running late when he met her outside the castle, but she figured that for once, punctuality probably wasn’t that important. It would have given some of her less… time-oriented cousins to arrive. As expected, Teddy wasn’t behind the bar, but she made a show of looking for them anyway, a frown creasing her features. “Oh, I was hoping––” she muttered as if to herself, but ensuring it was loud enough for Albus to hear. “Teddy promised to return some of my notes I left here if we came today, but they must be upstairs. Before we get our drinks, could we check? You know Teddy…” She rolled her eyes, shrugging her shoulders. Albus did know Teddy, and, well–– Lovable as they were, Teddy could be a bit of a walking disaster.

She opted not to give Albus time to argue, digging deep to find that bossy, headstrong girl she’d been when she’d started school as she led the way to the room Teddy had promised would house the surprise party. She knocked sharply on the wood, pausing for a moment before she pushed the door open. She would wait for Albus to step up behind her before moving to the side and holding the door open to subject him to the full force of festivity.

James was the first to arrive, with Louis in tow (literally, as he had the younger boy by the arm), and Teddy promptly fell over her own feet with excitement, colliding with James in a hug made overly-exuberant by her clumsiness. It was truly a move one might have expected from her mum, which made Teddy wonder how she had managed to be such a prodigy Auror. Teddy herself was a very strong spellcaster, having been Head...Boy in her year, but wasn't convinced she ever would have made a good Auror. Dark Wizards gave her terrible nightmares, and with the surge of werewolf attacks lately, it would have just been too much, too close, too personal. For now she was just clumsy Teddy, a bartender who could summon a bottle of firewhiskey and pour off a shot for James--and one for Louis, with a certain wink of I won't tell. "Thanks! No problems with the room at all. Rosmerta does like to have all my breakables occur within a contained...blast area. Here have this. If your sister asks, I have no idea how you got it. How are you? Oh I've missed the lot of you terribly, Roxy!"

She waved enthusiastically to the next Weasley to arrive, a grin spread across her face when she asked how she'd supplied the place. "Maybe. Do you know what your dad always said to me? Don't do anything I wouldn't do, Teddy, but if you do, name it after me." She paused a beat, but shook her head vigorously after, her grin never fading. "Nothing from the shop, just the regular old homebrew stuff. Don't touch that cake there, if you would--or the center table. That's where the real cake is hiding at the moment and this one is tricky. Oh and thank you! Your hair is beautiful as always, Roxy, so I will consider that an incredible compliment. Would you like a butterbeer? Or...a close enough to seventeen right, drink?"

Just then she heard a young voice shout her name, and Hugo collided with her in a solid thud-hug. Teddy laughed, returning the young boy's hug as tightly as she could. It wasn't so bad--she was still incredibly tall, and had a fair bit of strength to her from work. "Hugo! I've missed you! I'm glad you could come! I need you for a very important mission this summer. It involves crups. Say you'll accept, brave warrior?" She had given it a lot of thought, and Mateo would be able to recommend a reputable place to adopt from. Hugo would need some support, and who better to give it to him than one of the family who knew what it meant to lose a father? It wouldn't be quite the same of course, as Teddy didn't remember Remus at all the way Hugo remembered Ron, but she could do her best. Her smile hid her thoughts of poor, lost Ron, and just in time for Hugo to start fishing for a little party trick.

"Hmmmm that sounds tricky. Do you mean like…" she tapped a finger to her bottom lip thoughtfully, undoing her hair and shaking it out as it shifted to a full head of crimson and gold mane-like curls of startling volume. "...this? Tell me if I--"

Teddy cut her chatter short abruptly, Dominique's unmistakable stride passing the window at the side of the room. It was charmed darkened from the inside so that Albus wouldn't be able to look in, but Teddy would know just when to silence her very loud mouth. She quickly hushed the Weasleys and Potter (singular) around her, then waited for Albus to cross the door before shouting "Happy Birthday Albus!" and directing her wand toward the boy for a tiny explosion of birthday streamers and little lion confetti. With a quick wink to Dominique, she reached forward to attempt to haul him in through the door and muss up his hair playfully, and then turn him to face the rest of the clan and the colorful room they had set up.

Of course I mean that as a good thing. Look at this place!” James disentangled himself from Teddy’s various limbs (after giving them a properly aggressive hug, of course) to wander through the room in awe, staring at what looked like literally every colour in existence. “I don’t even know where you get all this stuff. Oh hello,” he’d paused in front of the cake, which seemed a little...meagre, to be honest. Certainly not nearly big enough to feed an entire family of Weasleys, particularly with James among them. There was a short silence as he considered this gravely worrying situation, hand rising to scratch at his cheek in consternation. “Um. There’s...more food, right? It’s just...I uh, think I could probably eat this entire thing on my own. I mean, it’s fine if this is it!” He added hastily, turning to Teddy with eyes wide and serious. “It’s Hogsmeade, can’t be too difficult to find a bite.” Of course, he hadn’t planned on having to locate sustenance, but it wasn’t going to be much bother given how much practice he had at it.

Firewhiskey proved a satisfactory distraction from his diverse food-related concerns, so much so that he could just about ignore his very much not-of-age cousin indulging in a very illegal tipple of his own. Well...just about but not quite, as was apparent when he poked an elbow into Louis’ ribs and waggled his eyebrows pointedly at said illegal tipple. “Best down that before your sister gets here. Which would be in T-minus three minutes and thirty-six seconds, since I believe being late actually contradicts her genetic code or something. Oh, hey Roxy!” He gave her an enthusiastic wave, remembering at just the last second to use the hand not holding alcohol. Teddy seemed intent upon introducing all the sixteen-year-olds to vice a few months early, which James couldn’t say he disapproved of, really - apart from one small thing. “Hey, that’s not fair. Where were you when I was sixteen?

Hugo burst in just then and James lapsed into an amused silence, watching the proceedings over the edge of his already half-empty glass. It would be best not to get too enthusiastic about free drinks with next week’s exams coming up fast, but Defense was over so he figured he at least deserved to celebrate that. The turnout for the party was better than he’d imagined it would be given its timing, and the few notable absences were only to be expected; he was shocked Dominique was coming at all, what with these being her last ever Hogwarts exams. Then again, these were her last ever Hogwarts exams; James thought by that time he’d have long since given up caring.

Frantic Teddy gesticulations alerted him to the fact that a birthday boy would be upon them imminently; after one last pat at his pocket to make sure the gift was still there, he turned his gaze to the door and waited. Poor Albus was absolutely showered in tiny glittery things within seconds of entering, but that was sort of a given with Teddy involved. James, for his part, settled for raucous clapping and a couple of unintelligible whoops - general celebratory background noise, basically. They might get around to eating soon, and that in itself was cause for festivity.

Freddie was running late, but, then again, he was reasonably sure nobody expected him to turn up at all.

Of course, he knew about Albus' birthday party. It would be impossible not to know, with the way gossip traveled in this family. He got an invitation delivered to the Sanctuary and his mum reminded him twice in her weekly letter. Freddie hadn't been planning on attending, because, well, he had work to do. He was an adult. With a job. And responsibilities. He didn't have time to skive off work to be annoyed by his cousins.

Nor did he want to miss work. He liked his dragons. And his solitude.

Still, when his advisor told him to deliver a case of vials filled with dragon's blood to the apothecary in Hogsmeade, he knew he had to go to the party at least to say hi. He knew he'd get an earful from Roxy and his mum and his grandmum and his dad and everyone else if he didn't stop in. He reasoned with himself that he didn't have to stay long-- he could just wave hi, hug his sister, and turn right around and head back to the Sanctuary. At the very least, he could always use the excuse that he didn't like to fly after dark. Which was untrue, but a good excuse nonetheless.

Broom in hand and delivery successful, he approached the Three Broomsticks already feeling wary. He didn't particularly like spending time with his family and never did so of his own volition. Still, he pushed the heavy door open and followed the noise to the back room. There was a lot of noise.

Evidently, he arrived just after the Birthday Boy, because he, too, was showered with confetti and accosted with noise. Immediately, he felt uncomfortable and out of place in the midst of the whoops and cheers and birthday greetings, that were, assuredly, not for him. Merlin, he should just turn around now.

Five months and two days. That was how long it had been since her father's body was found in Nurmengard prison.

Sometimes it still didn't seem real. That her father was gone. Really gone. Rose would still catch herself starting a letter to Mum and Dad... only to freeze mid-stroke on the 'D'. It was still her first instinct, to share with both of them things that she had discovered, especially about SPEW.

Reality could be so very cruel, to come crashing down upon her so fast without warning. It would leave her motionless, as if she would shatter to millions of pieces if she even twitched. She would stop seeing what was in front of her, instead picturing his too-still body.

Now was one of those times. Not a letter per say, but the urge to contact both of her parents, instead of the only one that was still alive. Rose was excited to celebrate Albus's birthday, of course - while their relationship wasn't super close, he still mattered to her - and wanted to share her plans of attending.

Rose shook her head, as if to shake herself out of an emotional downward spiral. It didn't matter that she wasn't in a social mood, she would try not to be a downer. The redhead forced her feet to take her through the doorway... only to get a face full of confetti.

She didn't know what else she should've expected, what with Teddy being the planner of this happy event, but still. It was spontaneous enough to get a laugh out of her. A genuine laugh, as well as a grin. For not only the birthday boy, whom she reached forward to hug, but her friend as well.

"Happy Birthday, Albus," she greeted, before shaking her head at Teddy, a fond smile tugging at her lips. She spotted her brother and sent him a nod - letting him know that she wouldn't hover, but that she was there if he needed anything. She directed her attention back to the birthday boy. "How's your day been so far?"

Almost immediately, Teddy had practically assaulted James in a hug, a sight which made Louis grin. It was nice, having someone as bright and jovial as Teddy as the eldest of them; it meant that parties and gatherings like this were incredibly fun. They didn't have their parents around to watch their backs, it was just the group of them having a party and at the very least it left Louis feeling a little more grown-up than normal family gatherings. Especially when a firewhiskey shot was pressed into his hand with a conspiratorial wink from Teddy. Both they and James were right; Louis didn't quite want to risk Dominique catching him with the drink, not when he was in the middle of crucial exams, and she was probably going to imminently be in the room so really he had no choice but to down the shot.

Drinking wasn't really something he'd partaken in before, and butterbeer was most definitely not the same, and Merlin did the shot burn all the way down. He was rather proud of himself for only choking a little bit and for not spitting any of the acrid whiskey out, instead only having a minor coughing fit and a shudder. "I can see why people say this stuff takes getting used to." He gave the glass an accusatory frown as he spoke, although he shot James a grin as his older cousin bemoaned the lack of pre-being-of-age alcohol. "Maybe Teddy assumed you'd already drank at 16. Or just that you weren't responsible enough." He was teasing of course; he was fairly sure James could be one of the most trustworthy out of all of them

The room was slowly accumulating more Weasley relations, and Louis couldn't help but feel a little fond at the sight of them all gathered. It'd been a hell of a year, full of things their parents had all dealt with in their own school time and beyond. He knew all too well how his father had been so badly scarred; he'd asked the question many times as a child and had only once been told the full story, and even then he had the impression at the time that it was a skimmed version. Really, they were lucky to all still be cheerful and in one piece. Frantic flapping from Teddy broke him from his thoughts, and with the hush that quickly befell the group of them, he got the impression that Albus was arriving within seconds. He quickly set aside the shot glass onto a spare table - he didn't risk downing the drink just to get caught out by Dominique with the empty glass in his hand after all - before facing the door again, joining Teddy with the cry of "Happy birthday, Albus!" when the birthday boy himself stepped through.

He stayed back a little, anticipating a clamour, but gave Dominique a slight wave from where he stood. Between both of them in the middle of their exams, he felt like he'd barely seen her, and in a few weeks, he was going to be seeing far less of her. He'd go back to school, she would go straight back to the Ministry, and while he was sure he wouldn't be nearly as lonely as he'd been at nine when she'd left for the school, he would definitely miss her. Luckily, there was no doubt in his mind that they'd write fairly often if only so she knew he was alright.

Victoire had been present in the Three Broomstick for some time now, already with a drink in her hands known as red current rum, tucked away in one part of the room with a clear view still of the doorway. The Inn held the same warm, crowded and smoky vibe to it. Once she was a teenager girl and now she was an adult and fitted in the scene like a regular. Seriously her training in concealment and disguise did come in handy, and to top it off her appearance was different.

The reason Victoire was sitting there was over the pondering if she should go upstairs or not. On one hand, her siblings and cousins surely will be there, she had not seen them for a while properly. On the other hand, HE was there! Receiving the letter from him, inviting her to the birthday party meant for her cousin Albus. Considering she has not seen him in well over a few years. So what was she to do? See her family and face Teddy or simply don’t attend and see them once the school year ends and make up for Albus’s birthday later.

So yes she was able to see her siblings and cousins entering and going upstairs. In her eyes they have grown up in the last 4 years since she graduated, but what would they think of her if they saw her now? Would they still see her as the same Victoire they grew up with? Or did she change? Give or take, she was a little different internally after facing some issues. Though she could not help the smile form on her face from her secluded corner, leave it to Dominique to be in charge.

Finishing the drink in her hand, of course as soon as Rose had arrived and disappeared upstairs, Victoire stood up and decided it did not hurt to check, it was in her nature to do so. Again thanking this time for stealth and tracking training, she quietly made her way upstairs. Carefully not to be seen, on cue same time as the whole ‘Happy Birthday Albus’ happened, she snuck a peek past the doorway before retreating back.

She did not see anyone who resembles an adult Teddy, taking a deep breath and catching what Rose said last, Vic’s bravery and confidence took its place.“Surely it would be better with me around?” she finally said with humor and a smile, announcing her presence to everyone in the room. Appearing in the doorway, the once blonde haired Weasley now sprouted the red hair to rival those of her red-haired cousins, which not even her own siblings have seen the change in appearance of their older sister until now. “Happy birthday Albus!”

The room is dark when Albus enters; in an instant, the darkness is banished and followed by the sound of cheers filling the room in its place. Confetti found its way onto the top of his head and through the chaos, he could make out the "Happy birthday, Albus" and he groaned inwardly: this was not what he had wanted but it seemed no one ever listened to him whenever it came to birthday celebrations.

In spite of those thoughts, Albus couldn't prevent a smile from creeping upon his face — he was definitely touched by his family, cousins and of course, his godbroth—

His eyes landed on Teddy and his mouth parted in confusion, wondering when had Teddy developed a chest and rather feminine features. Last he checked, Teddy was a boy.

Saving for the question, he bowed and managed to stutter out multiple 'thank you's to his cousins. When he heard his cousin Victoire's voice resound throughout the room, he found himself smiling a little bit more and his eyes landed on Fred, surprised to even find the older boy here too, so he managed a grateful smile.

The fanfare was as much as she ought to have expected from a Weasley-Potter gathering. She laughed as Albus was showered with confetti, raising her voice to join the chorus of others in their disharmonious celebratory exclamations. Albus, poor thing, was completely taken by surprise. He really had thought they’d forgotten about him. She didn’t understand how he could be so resigned to being forgotten. It wasn’t in her nature at all to accept an idea like that, but she was pleased they’d managed to coordinate an actual surprise party with this many variables to consider. That deserved some celebration of its own, and she spotted libations.

Once Albus had made it inside, Dominique edged to the side, away from the doorframe so that her family could accost the birthday boy as they were inclined to do. Easily-excited, the lot of them. She smiled at Teddy, who appeared today as they had appeared to her last month. Dominique was fiercely proud to know that Teddy was comfortable doing so around the people she considered her family, and imagined it wasn’t the easiest thing to do. ‘You’re beautiful!’ she mouthed as she moved to pour herself a drink. Things were going swimmingly, and there were so many of them here. They hadn’t all been together like this since Summer holiday last year. As overwhelming as her family could be, Dominique couldn’t deny that it was a particular brand of magic to have them gathered in one place.

Well, almost all of them. Freddie had turned up, she noted with amusement. “Good timing, Freddie.” She grinned into her cup. Poor Freddie looked like he’d gotten caught in a rainstorm, only instead of rain, confetti had rained from the sky. He also looked as though he might turn around and walk out again. “Come have a drink with me.” She picked up the Firewhisky bottle and shook it at him suggestively. “You’ve made it to the door and that’s half the battle. Don’t give up now.” She might’ve said more, but someone else had arrived. She hadn’t been expecting anyone else.

Behind Freddie, a girl had appeared in the doorway and announced her arrival. Dominique stopped talking at once, the hand holding the Firewhisky bottle dropping as she took her in. Her hair was wrong – so incredibly wrong – but she’d shared a room with her sister for most of her life. She would have known her anywhere, but she’d been gone for so long. Gryffindors were meant to be courageous, but in the aftermath of her catastrophic mistake, Victoire had tucked her lion’s tail between her legs and hidden herself away like a coward. Now she was here. Dominique supposed she should have felt relieved, should have gone to hug her, or poured her a drink. Instead, she felt the muscles in her face tighten, her lips pressing tightly together. Remembering the bottle in her hand, she unscrewed the lid and poured a generous amount into her cup. She retrieved another and poured a more reasonable amount, this one for Freddie, and held it out to him as though Victoire had not arrived at all.
