GRINDELWALD ADVANCES SOUTH
By Freya Blackwood
Perpetrates further violations to the ISS. Reports have reached this publication that Grindelwald, legendary dark wizard allegedly risen from the dead, has been sighted in Kidderminster, just to the west of Birmingham. Eyewitness statements indicate that a figure matching the subject’s description was seen within town limits late on Sunday, engaging in flagrant displays of magic in full view of the Muggle community along with a number of accomplices of unknown identity. Beatrice Derrinder, who was visiting a relative and witnessed the entire incident from her second-floor window, has provided details. “They was doing those big flashy spells, you know? Confringo and such-like. Nearly blew out me window! Very destructive, very irresponsible. It was no wonder the Muggles called their police, though little good they could do, let me tell you. They tried to use those little blasty things they have, the metal wands [Editor’s note: These are known as ‘guns’.] and I think they nearly hit one of the women he had with him, the pale one with that new-fangled haircut.”
Law enforcement officials were called on location within minutes, but once again failed to apprehend the suspect. Efforts to contain the situation are ongoing, with both Obliviators and Aurors remaining present in the area. This incident marks the southernmost sighting of “Grindelwald” since his initial appearance in Hogsmeade at the beginning of January, and has raised concerns that his projected route will bring the subject and his entourage dangerously close to London. CRACKDOWN ON YATTON
By Bertram Zerrinbottom
Cease and desist order issued. The Ministry of Magic has taken an official position with regards to Yatton, a village in Shropshire which has made a name for itself as a paragon of successful interaction between Muggles and the wizarding community. In view of recently enacted Legal Notice 113/21, the Wizengamot has decreed Yatton to be in violation of the tenets of the International Statute of Secrecy and has issued a cease and desist order with immediate effect, instructing all magical inhabitants of the village to terminate any interaction with the Muggle population until further notice.
Local schoolteacher Amelia Carnelian, who has previously given statements to the media, was on hand once more to provide a local perspective on the situation. “It’s ridiculous. They can’t just expect us to pretend our own families don’t exist. Tell the Wizengamot to try ignoring my mother-in-law and see how they like it.” Residents of the village appear to have reached a unanimous consensus to engage in peaceful resistance, and have stated that they will be proceeding with their daily activities in direct contravention of Ministry instructions. WIZENGAMOT ISSUE RESPONSE
By Adriel Snippit
Defend claims of neglect. Last week, Prophet reporters were given exclusive access to leaked correspondence from Prime Minister Siyal to former Minister for Magic Melloc Crowther, which shed light on the neglect of communications between magical and non-magical governmental bodies. This morning, the Wizengamot issued an official response to this letter, addressing allegations of ineptitude and the question of the efficacy of Chairman Dorrelby in upholding his role as Muggle Liaison. The stance of the Council appears to be in support of Dorrelby and the lack of communication as a whole, going so far as to criticize former Minister Crowther for an over-investment in his associations with the Muggle populace despite his firm stance in support of the Statute of Secrecy. "As a governing body," the Wizengamot penned, "we are committed to guiding our community by practice. In accordance with the recent enactment of Legal Notice 113/21, all interaction with Muggle citizens is to be limited to a level of absolute necessity. Prime Minister Siyal plays no part in the operations of our society, and shall be addressed only in those instances of the utmost importance, as is appropriate."
Legal Notice 113/21, which went into effect at the first of the month, has received innumerable criticisms as outdated and oppressive legislation. It is as of yet unclear how such a dramatic withdrawal from Muggle society and government will influence Britain's wizarding community, as it is the most comprehensive departure from non-magical society in known history. For a time under Rappaport's Law, MACUSA operated entirely independently of their Muggle counterparts to great detriment to the advancement of their communities, but this approach has never been tested in the UK. Even after the initial inception of the International Statute of Secrecy, the office of the Minister for Magic was created to maintain contact with Muggle leadership. Despite this long standing relationship between our highest offices of government, the Wizengamot have expressed a concern at the possibility of information trickling down from the Prime Minister’s office into lower branches of Muggle government.
