SUMMER 2021

It's time for a little rest and recuperation. After a tumultuous schoolyear culminating in coordinated attacks upon both Hogwarts and London, magical citizens could certainly use a break. Summer is upon us, and while the immediate danger has passed, not every creature is taking the summer off.

JUNE 19TH - JULY 13TH NOW OPEN

Alona Yael Adler

22 years old. Artist and Tutor. London. Wizarding World. Dua Lipa.

Zoe. 21. EST. Discord/PM.

Simon and Yael Adler were curse-breakers. Two of the best in the world. Yael was an Israeli magical historian, and Simon, a British arithmancer with a penchant for adventure. They met at Gringotts, where they were both applying for the same entry-level curse-breaking job. They went for coffee after the interview, both were extended offers, and the two were inseparable ever since.

Partners in every sense of the word, the two traveled through magical tombs and graveyards all over the world; Egypt, Mexico, China, Indonesia-- breaking curses and collecting gold. They weren't thieves, and they weren't stealing cultures, they justified. They were just 'finding' magical items and 'bringing' them back to Gringotts. It was fine. It wasn't like anyone was living here or worshiping these gods anymore. They were just silly, native cultures with a wealth of gold underground.

They underestimated; they made a wrong move; they went missing somewhere in the tunnels underneath a Babylonian ruin.

When Ingrid and Louis Adler received word that their son and his lovely wife were missing and presumed dead, they looked at the toddler, barely 18-months-old sitting on their floor, waving a wooden spoon around, grasped in her chubby hand tightly, and wept.

☼☼☼

Regardless of the tragic start to her life, Alona grew up with relative stability and normalcy. Her Bubbe and Zayde did everything in their power to make sure Alona was loved and cared for as a child. Every meal cooked, every afternoon spent in the park, every drawing hung on the refrigerator, left a warm, happy, memory.

Ingrid and Louis were muggles, introduced to the world of wizards when their son received a visit from a professor when he was eleven. The wizarding world changed vastly from the first time they stepped into Diagon Alley. They tried to give Alona a balanced childhood of what they understood; she attended a Jewish day school, she played football in the park with the other children their age and was enrolled in art lessons when she showed immense promise with her finger paintings.

Only when those finger paintings started to move did they know Alona took after her parents.

☼☼☼

It's not easy, to be Jewish and go to Hogwarts. It wasn't like Alona could invite any of her friends to her Bat Mitzvah. And she always had to explain things. Why she couldn't attend class on the High Holy Days. Why there was a Hannukiah in the Ravenclaw common room next to the Christmas trees. Why boxes of Matzos began appearing on dining hall tables during Passover. Hogwarts was accommodating, sure, just as they were for the Muslim students who fasted for Ramadan and left class to pray in an empty classroom that faced Mecca. Alona would just rather be known for her accomplishments than to be known as the Jewish girl.

And Alona had plenty of accomplishments. She made friends easily enough, and always had a smile to share or a sassy joke to make. Like her parents, she excelled in Charms and Transfiguration and Arithmancy and Runes. She even did well in Divination, which, let's face it, everybody fails. The Ravenclaw head of house urged Alona to pursue a career in curse-breaking, even set up a meeting with her parent's former boss. But Alona knew what her parents did. She loved her History of Magic class, and she knew that curse-breaking was imperialistic. She had no desire to steal heirlooms and antiquities from other cultures, no matter how ancient they may be.

No, Alona, the girl who covered Ravenclaw tower in paint and charcoal, whose uniform was always covered in a rainbow, no matter how many times she washed it or used scouring spells, was determined to create a better world. She wanted to make, not take.

With her head-strong (stubborn) and passionate personality, her creativity, and single-minded focus, she can often spend days in her small apartment, painting any surface she can find (or reach, in the case of her ceiling, currently a blue/green oceanic ombre). When she meets people at bars, she often intimidates them by talking their ears off about how corrupt the Ministry and Gringotts are, and how the people must destroy oppresive magical institutions. With her head-strong (stubborn) and passionate personality, her creativity, and single-minded focus, Alona can paint or sketch for hours and hours and forget to eat or shower. She can get into heated arguments with people she's barely met. She has a minor arrest record from the protests she attends. Once, at a muggle protest, she took her shirt off and painted her protest sign on her body. She'll thow punches at blood-purists. She wants werewolves to be accepted. She's radical. She's angry. She's violent.

She doesn't get many dates.

Now, twenty-two, out of school, and still not applying to the curse-breaking program, no matter how many times Gringotts asks, Alona is just trying to live her life as best she can. Both her grandparents are retired, and while she visits them every Friday for Shabbat, she prides herself on her financial independence. Still, she has to make money somehow. At the recommendation of a former professor, Alona has begun tutoring the children of wealthy wizarding families in Charms and Arithmancy-- really, anything school age kids struggle with-- because every parent wants their child to be exceptional, and when they pay enough galleons, Alona can help.

She wonders if her parents were alive if they would have wanted the same for her-- for her to be exceptional. She wonders what they were like if they are disappointed that she hasn't followed in their footsteps. She wonders if they would be proud of the path that Alona has taken. She tries not to think about it too much; no matter how many times she paints these questions, the colors will never reveal the answer.
